SUMMER PROGRAMS

MMK partnered with Lake George Regional Park/ Camp Podooc, Solon Rec, RSU 54 Summer REACH programs MSES & SAMS, and Skowhegan Adventure Camp.

The Boston Children’s fit kit focus on five key topics that directly impact children’s health: Nutrition, Sleep, Stress, Fitness and Screen Time/ Sedentary Time.

FARM to INSTITUTION

What a season it has been at the Somerset County Jail Garden! Together, we harvested an incredible 3,595 pounds of fresh produce, marking an inspiring start to our Full Plates Full Potential partnership. With plans underway to improve watering, feeding, and maintenance, we’re already dreaming big for next year.

Our Seeds of Hope work continues to grow. Over the winter, our team is developing hands-on learning tools and launching Root Camp, a new remote education program that brings garden-based learning into schools, jails, and hospitals across Somerset County. Adding to the excitement, filming has been completed at Madison Elementary School and the Somerset County Jail for a PBS documentary highlighting the transformative impact of this work.

We are grateful to everyone who made this growing season a success—from our partners and volunteers to the men and women who worked in the garden, finding hope and healing through growing food. The seeds planted this year will continue to bloom for seasons to come.

SCHOOLS: 100 MILE CLUB

26 schools and 7 Summer Recreation Programs in Somerset County offered 100 Mile Club programming during the 2024- 2025 school year.

3,964 participated in 100 Mile Club during the 2023-2024 school year.

674,906 total miles collected in Somerset County.

SOMERSET OUTING CLUB

During the 2024–25 season, the Somerset Outing Club shifted its focus to fewer, larger-scale trips. Destinations included Big Moose Mountain, Titcomb Mountain Ski Resort, a Family Farm Day at Martin Woods Farm, and the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. The goal of this year’s trip schedule was to offer activities and experiences that families and individuals in our community may not otherwise be able to access on their own.

By offering one trip per season, we also created opportunities to highlight activities that can be enjoyed year-round, showcasing Maine’s ability to provide engaging outdoor experiences not only in the summer, but throughout the fall, winter, and spring. Through partnerships with Skowhegan Outdoors, MSAD 54 Transportation, and The Maine Meal, the Somerset Outing Club continues to offer high-quality outdoor experiences while reducing common barriers such as long-distance transportation, access to healthy food for energy, and the gear needed to fully participate in each activity.

9 trips – 135 participants

“Hiking Borestone Mountain was so much fun! This was my first time at this mountain and I likely would not have gotten to hiking it if it weren’t for this trip. My favorite part was reaching the summit and having lunch at the top with everyone (and trying to spot Katahdin in the distance)!”

“The Move More Kids Program has helped our school become much more active. Along with 100 Mile Club, we do morning movement as a whole school, and every teacher incorporates movement into their class. Our outdoor classroom is complete, fully accessible, and has been used by all staff and students, providing new learning experiences. Our kindergarten and preschool students enjoy exploring the trails and outdoor classroom on Woods Wednesdays and Forest Fridays.”

“An elementary school champion who oversees MMK programming shared, ‘I’ve seen students’ social skills improve – they work more as a team, make new friends, and connect with classmates they normally wouldn’t. Attendance and grades have improved, and students who used to wander are spending more time in class.'”

“A Junior High school champion shared, ‘All students at our school participated in the Fit Kit program and actively engaged in the activities. It sparked discussions about nutrition, sleep, and stress. The sugary beverage presentation was especially eye-opening, teaching students about quick energy and the effects of energy drinks. Students enjoyed the way the virtual lessons and the way they were presented.'”
